NOTE: In this tutorial I show you how to replicate Zuma backgrounds. We are not currently able to create custom paths. In order to complete certain steps, you'll need Paint.NET. The resolution of the background must be 640x480. Here are a few steps on how to replicate Zuma Deluxe's background style. ibb.co/n2ektvStep #1: Outline your path
Pretty simple step, I suggest using the curve/line tool. Your path can go anywhere, just remember, there is a frame! (Make sure there is space for the frog pad and the skull) Step #2: Add a second layer of thicker outline.
This method is to ensure your path will have texture other than just plain line the spheres will follow. Just look at Spiral of Doom! Use a thicker brush and trace your path. Step #3: Add some geometry to the background.
Simple step. It is to insure that your background will have the ancient feel. You can add smileys, circles, snakes or anything corresponding to the ancient civilization. Add the frog pad and the skull pad. Step #4: Add noise.
Is explanation really needed? Step #5: Emboss
This stylize tool is there for you. It will apply shading automatically to your background, whilst adding the stoney texture. Step #6: Color.Color it any way you want, but make sure it isn't going to turn out rainbow colored. (Unless you're aiming it to) Tip: Use transparent colors.

But I'm confused about Step 2.

Oh, this is very neato. I tried outlining and shading paths with GIMP, and it was...tacky. Thanks for the guide. Cool tutorial! But I'm confused about Step 2. There's probably some Select From Path->Grow function or something. Worse come to worse, it's a new layer, so retrace the original path? I dunno.

But I'm confused about Step 2. To explain, I just used a thicker brush and traced the path in a new layer below, the original trace was lightened so Emboss can later on detect it.
